Harley Davidson for instance, sells an incredible line of motorcycles. How many of their customers are really buying the motorcycle? These customers are actually buying a lifestyle. A lifestyle of freedom, adventure and excitement. Remember, the brand is the experience and emotional impression of a company, product or service – it’s the lifestyle, in this case. While the product is known for outstanding quality and performance, this popular brand is about freedom and adventure.
Look at companies like, Coca Cola, Nike, Starbucks, Jeep, etc… they spend serious resources on brand development. Think about buying a cup of coffee. Anyone can easily stop in at the local convenience store and pick up a decent cup of coffee, however Starbucks has developed such a strong brand that people will pay twice the price for a cup of java at Starbucks. Why, you ask -- because they are buying the experience and getting a good cup of coffee. Along with the coffee, the customer experiences a warm and comfortable atmosphere, friendly environment, expert service, high quality products, consistent experience from store to store, the cool music -- and these are just some of the elements that build this mighty brand. It’s not only the coffee.
